The best Mario game is 64, has been 64, and always will be 64. From the epic music to the corny mustache jokes, the game had a unique and awesome atomsophere. The epic 3D platofrming that miles ahead of anything in its time has aged extremely well even to 2012, and the game's reward of letting you fly around the castle really shows the award of getting all 120 stars.
However, I can not get over the music. It is great. Here are some of the best tracks

Bowser's Inside Story is better.

Sunshine is easily the worst of the series gameplay-wise. Incorporating FLUDD required getting rid of Mario's Long Jump, and making the Spin Jump extremely hard to do. Also, all the levels had to be designed with FLUDD in mind, so the platforming wasn't as smooth as it was in 64 or would be in the Galaxy games.
You are really denying yourself from the Mario franchise if you only play Sunshine. As a 64 fanboy, if you have a Wii, I'd suggest picking up 64 on the Virtual Console for only 10 dollars. There is also a remake on the DS for about 10 dollars, which updates the graphics, expands the game to 150 stars, and adds three new characters to play as. However, the remake is slightly imbalanced as Luigi completely decimates the platforming by just spin jumping across level long gaps as if it wasn't even there.
EDIT: I'm not saying that Sunshine is a bad game in any way, so please do not take my post that way. Sunshine is one of the best games on the Gamecube, which has lots of great classics. It's just that, like someone on the IGN forums said, a good game that has the misfortune of being in a great series
Plus, the music owns. Ricco Harbor is the best.

I vaguely remember trying 64 but don't remember getting very far... it was more my brother's thing. :\
That said I remember this song pretty fondly:
